Ground beef been in fridge 3 days; can I eat it?
Hey all,
I bought ground beef from whole foods about 3 days ago. Can I still eat it? I bought it on the 3rd or 4th of this month (can't remember). I checked the "packaged" and "sell by" dates. The packaged was the 3rd and the sell by was the 6th. Does that mean that, in theory, it could have been refrigerated until today (the 6th) anyway and still be considered "good"? I don't really know much about when food goes good/bad, but I did eat some chinese that had been sitting in my room for like 8 hours yesterday (and I have no AC so it's like 80 degrees in my room) and didn't get sick (yet!)
What do you guys think? I smelled it and it didn't have any off-putting odor, but I don't know what rotten meat smells like so idk; maybe I'm overly cautious.
-=EDIT=-
..I ate it. If you don't see posts from me for a while you'll know why. The burger was good though. Usually go for the medium but went well-done. Feels a little bubbly in the stomach but that's probably because I ate ice cream too and I'm lactose intolerant.
-=LIVE UPDATE=-
2 hours in - still alive, feeling a little hot but that's because it's hot outside. Starting to get hungry again. Might test my luck on round 2 of ground beef.
Until then,
War

Yes, I buy frozen stuff from the meat packing place and let it thaw and sit a day or 2 before even using it.
Getting the beef from Whole foods, must be nice Big Money

if you don't feel safe eating it its generally a good idea not to eat it. That said It should be fine, check i tt over and mask sure you cook it thoroughly I personally have had worse, but if you feel unsafe then don't do it.

"Sell by" is exactly what it sounds like. Why would a store sell food that expires on that day? It'll probably be fine for another week if not longer.
If you ate chinese that was sitting in that heat for 8 hours, you have a much higher chance at getting food poisioning than eating meat that's been in the fridge for a week past the "sell by" date (let alone 0 days).

It is still in date and refrigerated, so go for it, cook it a little bit longer if it worries you.

Is it grey or green? If not, it's safe.

Merely a Setback
Yeah, but if you're keeping meat more than a week, I'd freeze it.

Stood in the Fire
When in doubt, throw it out

Never throw out perfectly edible food!
Most of the times you can smell the food and see if it's gone bad.

the colour of ground beef really is one of the keys, if it is still redish in colour its generally good, as soon as it starts to darken as weirdbear says towards a greyish colour then dont tough it. That said its usually good for around 5 days or so minimum, but thats mainly because of the best before date.

IF you are worried cook it a little longer.
Generally you should be very observant if you are making chopped steaks its very important that its well done if its a little old. Unlike a real steak there will be germs in the center of it because of the mincing.

If it isn't graying all over yet, should be fine. Once it starts looking less red and more brown/gray or smelling, that's your cue to chuck it...
Besides, if it's just now the sell date, should be fine. Or freeze it, it'll keep easily until you want to eat it providing you seal it right.

GREEN mince on the other hand should be thrown out right away.

Got a cat? They can detect bad food and will refuse it.

Use By & Best Before dates are always lenient, to ensure there is little risk.
Most meats will be fine for a few days over their packaging dates if kept sealed and in a fridge. However, if you want to check it, smell it. Meats give off a very odd disgusting smell when they're starting to go off. If you think it smells okay, cook it up, but do it for a few minutes longer if you want to be even safer.

I have always eaten ~everything that still looks good... or not so, as long as there is nothing on it and when cut open, there is nothing in it, you should be fine :|
